On May 5, 2015 HuSArctic has gladly met Matti Särkelä, representative of the Reindeer Herders' Association, at the Arctic Centre of the University of Lapland. Reindeer Herders' Association works as a link between the herding cooperatives. The role of the Association is to direct reindeer husbandry, develop reindeer herding, promote research on it, and to handle reindeer husbandry relations with the society. HuSArctic was represented by Dr. Kamrul Hossain and Ms. Anna Petrétei. In the meeting a number of important issues related to the challenges facing the local and indigenous Sámi reindeer herders, in particular in the context of the Finnish North, have been discussed. The meeting was intended to figure out how the efforts of Reindeer Herders' Association to mitigate the challenges contribute to improve the feeling of security amongst the reindeer herders. One of the core objectives of the meeting has been to learn the practical aspects of security challenges facing the herding communities, and translate them into academic knowledge as part of the goals of the HuSArctic project.
